| Please see our information on referrals and admissions for criteria relating to residential placements at Sunfield. |
Sunfield is set in a beautiful rural location and in its own 58 acres of parkland.
We have a farm, pets' corner, horticultural areas, adventure playground and other outdoor facilities such as trails and calm spaces, all of which are used for both leisure and educational programmes.

Sunfield offers a range of other facilities on site including a soft play / light therapy room, sensory room and games room. Weekly clubs and activity programmes are on offer to all children. The children and young people are also helped to access all community based leisure facilities such as shopping, cinema, bowling and swimming. Some young people attend community based clubs and events on a regular basis.
Sunfield is a non-denominational school and children and young people come from a variety of religious and cultural backgrounds. We celebrate all festivals and work with the child, families and the placing authority to ensure we are meeting the cultural and religious needs of each child.
There are eleven residential houses on site. One of these is a self-contained unit within our 'main house' building; the remainder are fully self-contained houses within the grounds. Each house has single bedrooms for five, six or seven children and one house has eight single bedrooms. Some bedrooms are suitable for double occupancy but are not used in this way except in the case of same sex twins. Each house also has its own kitchen, dining room, lounge and activity room as well as office, toilet, bathroom and shower facilities. Some houses have their own fenced garden. Some are single sex groups and others are mixed.
All children are encouraged and supported to personalise their own rooms. Many have their own stereos, TV and video. The fittings and furnishings in each house reflects the needs of the group as a whole. For example the 'activity' space in a younger children's house may be a playroom, while this area is used as a quieter place for the computer or individual pastimes in a house for 16 - 19 year olds.
Each house's purpose reflects the needs of different age and ability groups. The age, interests, experience and qualifications of staff are matched to meet the range of age and need. In general terms each house has one of the following age ranges - under 12, 11 - 16, or 15 - 19. Children are initially assessed and placed in a house according to age and need and move house when these needs change and are better met within a different group. However, this is not 'set in stone' and, for example, it is not unusual for a 14 year old to be placed in a group aged 15 - 19 if it is agreed that this meets his/her needs and will mean that the young person can remain with the same group until they leave.
Three of our houses are for boys who have been assessed as being within the more severe range on the Autistic Spectrum, many of whom have challenging behaviour. The programme for these children is based on a highly integrated trans-disciplinary approach to learning. Details of this programme are available - ask for the SIECCA brochure (Sunfield's Integrated Education & Care Curriculum Approach).
As well as the one residential unit, the 'main house' facilities include a reception area, shop, large dining room and kitchens, central laundry facilities, admin offices, the Professional Development Centre, psychology, occupational, speech and language and music therapy rooms and some classrooms. It also has three self contained family flats - see Family Centres for more details.
