EARLY CHILDHOOD INTERVENTION - CONFERENCE 2005
Back
A two day European conference on Early Childhood Intervention, organised by Sunfield Professional Development Centre (PDC), was held at the International Convention Centre, Birmingham on the 28th and 29th November 2005.

Presentations and workshops were held by over 50 speakers to discuss key issues surrounding early intervention (anything which supports a child’s development, from family support to therapy and health care). They compared Early Childhood Intervention policy and practice in the UK with current thinking in Europe, America and New Zealand.

A keynote speech was given by Maria Eagle MP, Parliamentary Under Secretary of State for Children, Young People and Families, during which she said:
"Disabled children and their families need professionals to work together from day one so that they can get the care and support they need to make sure they can lead full, rewarding lives and reach their potential. This is their right. Anything that assists with effective help to meet this goal for disabled children is worthwhile."
The conference, which also marked the launch of Sunfield’s 75th anniversary year, was awarded European Presidency Status, and attracted over 450 delegates from around the world.
Professor Barry Carpenter OBE, Chief Executive and Principal of Sunfield welcomed international experts on stage including Dr Michael Guralnick from the USA, President of the International Society on Early Intervention and Jacques Schloesser, Secretary of the European Association on Early Intervention, Luxembourg.

Professor Carpenter commented:
"This conference has highlighted that children with disabilities and their families deserve the highest quality support this country can provide."

Thank you to all the sponsors and staff who through all their hard work and support, made the conference not only possible but a success.
