SUNFIELD'S EDUCATION DEPARTMENT
Back
Sunfield students attend school between 9.15 and 3.30 during term time. The school day starts and ends with Circle Time This is a time when care staff and education staff can share news and information informally, and celebrate the achievements of the day.
Class groups are small – each class is taught by a teacher, a senior teaching assistant and additional teaching assistants. The head of education is supported by three assistant headteachers.
The curriculum
Sunfield’s Integrated Education and Care Curriculum Approach (SIECCA) is based upon a curriculum written to the five outcomes as expressed in Every Child Matters. Targets from this curriculum support individual learning by meeting the objectives expressed in students’ Statements of Special Educational Needs(SEN). 5 targets from this curriculum are set and evaluated for each student every term.

Literacy, Numeracy and Personal, Social, Health Education and Citizenship (PSHCE) are core subjects. There is a pronounced emphasis on the development of communication skills. Augmentative communication systems are used effectively so that Sunfield is a communication rich environment.

The school is divided into two departments:
  • Key Stage 1, 2 & 3
  • 14 – 19 Department
All the subjects in the National Curriculum are taught at key stages 1, 2, 3 & 4 and we use P-levels for teacher assessment. At post-16, attainment is assessed using FE levels which relate to areas of the curriculum.

At key stage 4 and post-16, work-related learning and college experience is introduced. The post-16 curriculum has a heavy emphasis on life skills and the skills needed for independence and life beyond Sunfield. Key Skills, (Communication, Application of Number, Information Technology, Relating to Others, Improving own Learning and Performance and Problem Solving) are integral in the work that our students do at post-16.

Accreditation
Sunfield is registered as a centre to deliver OCR and ASDAN schemes which provide external accreditation for the work students do in school. Care staff and education staff work closely together so that achievements in both care and educational settings contribute to portfolios. Certificates are awarded at our Christmas open day.

Every month we hold an Achievement Assembly. Students are awarded certificates for their achievements which are then displayed for all to see.
