Linda, Vicky & Jan are all registered Signalong trainers who have the responsibility to ensure that the large staff team at Sunfield are fully conversant with signing. Linda is also a Team Leader responsible for a residential house within Sunfield, Vicky is Speech & Language Therapist and Jan is the Transitions Solutions Officer.

The course will give you an insight into signing and why we should be using it, as well as giving you hands on training of various signs and putting these into practice.

THIS COURSE WILL BENEFIT YOU BY:
giving you an understanding of why Signing is so useful for anyone with Learning Difficulties, giving you the skills to be able to start signing.

28 March PDC/089 MUMS' DAY - Developing Stories to Support Social Understanding in Children with ASD

THIS DAY IS SPECIFICALLY FOR MUMS OF CHILDREN & ADULTS WITH SPECIAL NEEDS

This course will introduce the use of stories to address social understanding difficulties experienced by children with an ASD. Stories are individually written to describe situations, skills or concepts that are creating confusion or difficulty for the child.

THIS COURSE WILL BENEFIT YOU BY:
  • presenting methods for assessing the issues that need to be addressed in relation to a child’s social understanding and behaviour
  • identifying the criteria and guidelines that define a good story, and illustrating through examples how to write appropriate stories
AT THE END OF THIS COURSE THOSE PARTICIPATING WILL HAVE:
  • an awareness of the nature and role of stories as a social support strategy for people with an ASD
  • an understanding of the criteria and critical elements that define and structure a story
  • knowledge to write stories that appropriately address areas of difficulty in social understanding encountered by individuals

20 June PDC/090 DADS' DAY - Behaviour Management

Nick is both Head of Psychology and Therapies, plus the Assessment and Outreach Department for Sunfield. He has strategic responsibility for challenging behaviour across the organisation.  He is an Honorary National Adviser for the Downs Syndrome Association, and a member of the Challenging Behaviour National Strategy Group.

  • the Dos and Don’ts of managing behaviour
  • Assessment Factors (Short – Long Term)

24 Oct PDC/092 Understanding the Power of Play

Led by:  Emma Taylor & Kellyanne Thornton - Play Therapists


Emma Taylor and Kellyanne Thornton have worked closely with children and young people with intellectual disabilities for eight years in the Psychology and Therapies Department at Sunfield. Both graduated from university with a degree in Psychology. While employed as psychology assistants for Sunfield they became particularly interested in the role and power of play interventions in the developing child with learning disabilities and ASD.  They are now qualified play therapists under Play Therapy UK.

THE AIM OF THE COURSE IS TO:
  • heighten awareness that non-directive and directive play can be valuable tools for children with learning difficulties and ASD
  • provide you with the opportunity to acquire basic understanding of the principles and practice of interactive play intervention and play therapy
  • provide you with play opportunities to re-discover the powerful nature of play
COURSE MEMBERS SHOULD EXPECT:
  • to work in a warm and supportive atmosphere
  • to share play experiences through group work
  • to be involved in a range of practical activities that may create mess
