Sunfield health resources consist of a surgery/treatment room and office/resource centre situated on the first floor of the main building. The health team aims to support students in accessing health care as needed and to promote health and well-being for all, incorporating the outcomes framework from 'Every Child Matters'. They will provide advice, treatment, medication and liaison with other health professionals - working with students, staff and families to ensure good health now and in the future.
The nursing team consists of five trained nurses; generally there is a nurse on duty every day, including weekends. A monthly rota is available across site to check when nurses are on duty and clinic dates. All students are also registered with the local doctor.
Students receive a yearly school medical. This is completed by the local GP at Sunfield's surgery. LAC medicals/health assessments may also be required by Social Service departments. Health monitoring such as blood pressure, height, weight and urine testing can all be carried out in surgery. Some syndromes require particular health checks such as blood tests, which are carried out by the practice nurse at the GP's surgery.
Hearing tests are referred by the GP. At present, hearing is not tested routinely. However, the speech therapist will keep full observations to see whether a child is showing signs of hearing loss so that testing/intervention can be arranged.
Yearly eye tests are arranged at Sunfield. An examination will show if eyes are healthy, if they need correcting, and may also reveal other health problems such as diabetes. If further treatment is required, it may require a referral from the optician to the GP or specialist clinic.
Annual dental checks are arranged by the health team for most students. The clinics are organised in the surgery/treatment area and are timetabled to take place during the school day to enable care and education staff to support each student. For further dental treatment or if an appointment is required between check-ups, students can attend a clinic at Worcester or Kidderminster with the community dentist.
The chiropodist attends Sunfield once a month, either on a Wednesday or Thursday (alternating to ensure all students can be seen if required). Each student can be assessed and treated as required. This is a non-NHS service.
Referrals to the visiting consultant psychiatrist are made through the GP and monthly clinics are held at Sunfield.
Each child has a health plan to meet their individual health needs. A full record is kept of all significant treatment, illnesses, accidents and injuries to the child. Health plans are regularly reviewed by the health team, ensuring health monitoring is recorded and delivered as required.
