Sunfield Assessment and Outreach Service (SAOS) serves the West Midlands region and was established to ensure that, wherever possible, children and young people with challenging behaviour and Autistic Spectrum Disorder (ASD) can live and learn successfully within their home communities.
SAOS works with families and education professionals, as well as social services and other agencies.

Our aims
To conduct assessment by:
- providing ASD-specific assessment and advice over a range of disciplines to complement local diagnostic services
- including parents and carers in the assessment process, sharing views and observations
- providing a report which gives practical recommendations to address the needs and challenges associated with ASD
- offering the choice of a variety of locations for the assessment, including on-site at Sunfield, to suit individual needs
- providing accommodation for parents and carers to stay nearby during the on-site assessment process

To provide support by:
- sharing specialist skills and knowledge with relevant adults to ensure success for all
- providing relatively intensive and time-limited support in the young person’s educational, leisure or residential environment
- maximizing learning and independence through agreed and relevant goals
- liaising with all relevant staff and carers
- agreeing a planned and gradual withdrawal of support
- providing on-going telephone help and advice for individuals and organisations whom we have supported

Assessments and support are individually tailored, through discussion with carers and professionals involved, in recognition of each young person’s unique profile of need within their environment.
Referral can be made by authorised Local Authority officers in accordance with local procedures and using the SAOS standard referral form.
