Principal and Chief Executive
Professor Barry Carpenter OBE
Following initial teaching qualifications, Barry served in a variety of teaching posts in special schools in Sandwell, Dudley and Essex, taking up the headship of Blythe Warwickshire School (SLD/PMLD) in 1982. Further qualifications in special needs were obtained through the universities of London and Nottingham. He was appointed inspector of schools for Solihull LEA in 1989 and was twice seconded to HMI for national survey projects. In 1993, Barry became principal lecturer and founder director of the Centre for Special Education at Oxford. Barry joined Sunfield as the principal/chief executive in November 1997. He was created Honorary Professor (Learning Disabilities) in 1998 and awarded a PhD for services to international special education in 1999. Barry received an OBE in the 2001 New Year's Honours List for services to children with special educational needs. The following year, he chaired the national inquiry into the Mental Health Needs of Young People with Learning Disabilities. In 2005, he was made Honorary Professor of Early Childhood Intervention at the University of Worcester (the first such Chair in the UK). Currently, he represents the Disability Rights Commission on the General Teaching Council and is chairing the National Disabled Teacher Taskforce. He represents the UK on the European Association of Early Childhood Intervention. The author of over 100 articles on a variety of topics in special educational needs, Barry won the prestigious Times award for his co-edited book ‘Enabling Access’ and he lectures nationally and internationally, most recently in Turkey, Portugal, the USA, Australia and New Zealand. |

Assistant Chief Executive
Catriona O'Malley
Catriona has a diploma in Child and Social Care. She has worked for over 20 years in residential care establishments for children with special needs. She has a Certificate of Management (CMS) and has been at Sunfield since 1998. Prior to this, she was deputy head of care for seven years in a residential school for children with learning disabilities and epilepsy.
Catriona is involved with several national groups working to improve the quality of care and services for disabled children. She is particularly committed to raising standards of care for children through improving the competency and professional status of residential care staff. |

Director of Finance & Administration / Company Secretary
Robert Barker BA FCA
Bob read History at Bristol University and qualified as a Chartered Accountant with Price Waterhouse. From 1984 to 1996 he worked as a senior manager in the financial services sector, including spells with NatWest, Royal Bank of Scotland, Abbey National and Midland Bank.
In 1996 Bob joined CLIC, the Bristol-based children’s cancer charity, as Director of Finance & Administration. Underpinned by two mergers, the organisation grew rapidly and by 2005 had become the London-based CLIC Sargent.
Bob moved on to Sunfield in September 2005. His responsibilities encompass finance, administration, property maintenance, human resources, health & safety, estates, fundraising, marketing, information technology, insurances, investments and company secretarial matters. |

Director of Appeals and Development
Ian Jones BSc. MInstF (cert)
Ian has a BSc. Degree in Quantity Surveying and worked in private practice for several years before diversifying into the charity sector. He is also a fully qualified fundraising manager, having been awarded the Certificate in Fundraising Management by the Institute of Fundraising.
Ian has extensive experience of fundraising and development which has been gained through working for a small national charity, KIDS, at local and national level, and then from 1998, as Director of Appeals & Development at Sunfield. |

Head of Care
Mark Brocklebank
Mark has a BA (Hons) in Education, Certificate in Social Services and is an NVQ Assessor. Mark has worked at Sunfield for more than 20 years where he has gained a wealth of direct care experience as well as many years experience in a care management post.
Mark holds responsibility for the Care Department and shares the position of Registered Manager for Sunfield with Catriona O’Malley.
Mark is closely involved with the National Association of Independent Schools and Non-Maintained Special Schools (NASS) and is committed to raising standards for disabled children, through supporting staff development and opportunities for children to flourish based around Every Child Matters outcomes.

Head of Psychology and Therapies
Nick Logan
Nick has a master's degree in Educational Psychology and Child Psychology. He also has a degree in Education and a certificate in Youth and Community Studies. He is an honorary tutor in psychology at the University of Birmingham. Nick has vast experience in delivering psychology services. Prior to coming to Sunfield, he worked for Sandwell LEA. Nick heads up the psychology and therapy services at Sunfield and co-ordinates the research initiatives. |

Head of Family Services
Sally Conway
Sally has a background in Learning Disability Nursing and worked in a variety of settings supporting adults with learning disabilities before moving to Sunfield.
Sally has been at Sunfield since 1999 and has been instrumental in developing Family Services from its infancy to its current profile. She has undertaken extensive research regarding family issues. |
