Sunfield pupils jazz it up at Hagley RC High School
Pupils from Sunfield have been Jazzing It Up during June as part of a Community Arts project organised by Hagley Roman Catholic School, to bring a variety of art forms to nine schools in the region, working together on the common theme of jazz.
At Sunfield, the project was launched with a performance by Birmingham based Aaron Diaz Jazz Quartet, and has been followed up with a series of visual arts workshops with visual artist, Tess Hills, who has used jazz music as a stimulus for the children to respond to using a variety of different visual art techniques.

A series of photographs of the pupils taken during the jazz concert and creating their artwork during the workshops, as well as of the finished pieces of art, has been used to produce a stunning hanging. This will be displayed during a Celebration Day at Hagley RC School, when all nine participating schools will gather to present their work.
Director of arts at Sunfield, Peppy Hills, says: “This has been a tremendous project for our children, who have a range of profound and complex learning difficulties. Creative Arts are a very important part of our student learning and we have been delighted to have the opportunity to host more live music here at Sunfield, work with a professional artist and exhibit our student’s work alongside that of our mainstream peers.
“The students have benefited enormously from the project and we are very grateful to Hagley RC School for inviting us to take part.”
Jane Ward, Community Arts officer for Hagley RC School, adds: “It has been wonderful to see so many children from different schools using jazz as their inspiration for their own art work. Some have created enormous jazz instruments, whilst another school put on a fashion show to jazz music – all the children involved have been really imaginative.”
