Sunshine Week is part of a wider appeal to raise £250,000 for the fit out and furnishing of the brand new educational centre at Sunfield. This includes state-of-the-art, built-for-purpose classroom facilities for the pupils at the school which offers full-time education and residential care for children with Autistic Spectrum Disorders and other profound and complex learning needs.

Pupils in years 7, 8 and 9 at Pedmore have been busy making yellow charity ribbons and, with the help of the Food Technology department, baking cakes for sale during lunchtimes throughout Sunshine Week. The Technology department have also created “sunshine keyrings” and these, along with Sunfield’s Sunny Bear teddies and Sunshine Week t-shirts will be on sale to staff and students alike.

The whole event has been co-ordinated by teachers Helen Brooks and Rachel Shabaan and teaching assistant, Paul Fenn, with the help of year 10 students, who will be in charge of the running of the events during Sunshine Week.

Helen Brooks says:
“The students have had a great deal of input into how we should support Sunfield during Sunshine Week and they have put in a lot of effort, both in terms of making items to sell and in organising the whole event.

“As a school, we feel that it is important for the children here to recognise that there are people in the wider local community who need and deserve support and our students have got behind this appeal whole-heartedly.”

Director of Appeals & Development at Sunfield, Ian Jones, adds:
“Because we do not receive and Government funding for projects like our new school, the £3.5 million total has had to be met entirely through fundraising. Now that the building is nearing completion, we need to raise money to buy the very specialised equipment and furniture our children need to cater for their needs. Without the help of schools like Pedmore, and other organisations, this would not be possible and we wish them every success with their event."

Anyone interested in taking part in Sunshine Week can receive a free fundraising guide and order promotional t-shirts and mini Sunny Bear teddies from Elizabeth Wood at Sunfield, 01562 882253.
