Boxing Gala raises over £6000 for new classrooms appeal
The first Sunfield Charity Boxing Gala at Aston Villa Conference Centre, Villa Park on Friday 26th January saw the former WBC super-middleweight boxing champion Richie Woodhall, Bunny Johnson, first black boxer to become British heavyweight champion, and former Birmingham City FC footballer Joe Gallagher enjoy an evening of dinner, champagne and Amateur championship boxing in aid of Sunfield.
Almost 200 people attended the event, which was organised by Sunfield and boxing coach Frank O’Sullivan from Birmingham City Amateur Boxing Club and included 11 bouts of boxing, an auction and raffle.
The event was supported by companies from all over the Midlands including Barclays Bank who, through the Barclays Community Programme, matched funded the event with £1500. Each year, Barclays donate 1% of pre-tax profits to local communities.
Dale Branford and Pritpal Kaur from Barclays Bank, Rowley Regis branch stated: “Without exception those who attended enjoyed a wonderful evening of entertainment and boxing.”
Organiser Alicia Wingfield, Deputy Director of Appeals at Sunfield, said the Boxing Gala was a great success and was set to become an annual event. She said: “More than £6,000 will be going directly to Sunfield’s appeal for new classroom facilities. The evening was a real success and everyone enjoyed it. I have had a lot of telephone calls from people saying that we must do it again and the boxers were thrilled to be involved. We haven’t finalised the details yet but we will be doing it again.”
The money raised will go towards establishing a state-of-the-art school building at Sunfield. |
