SUNFIELD ASSESSMENT AND OUTREACH SERVICE

Assessment

Our Assessment Service is intended to complement local services, for example Child Development Centres, providing ASD-specific assessment once a diagnosis has been obtained locally.

A family, Local Education Authority (LEA), Social Services department or other agency may be confident that the young person's needs are being appropriately met, but they may wish to gain further clarification of the nature of the child's needs and their response to a specific environment.

If the young person has severe learning disabilities and is between the ages of 6 and 19 years, an LEA, Social Services department, family, or other agency may request a day or residential placement at Sunfield School. The Assessment Service can provide additional assessment information to clarify the nature of the young person's needs.

Assessments are individually tailored. Referrals come from a variety of sources, and the level of funding is negotiated according to the profile of assessment agreed.
  • We offer assessment over a broad range of disciplines in a variety of contexts, either within the young person's community setting or at Sunfield

  • The assessment information provides a starting point for specialist advice and guidance to education and residential staff, parents and carers

  • We can involve families in the assessment of their son or daughter - sharing views and information, and discussing the most appropriate ways to meet the needs and challenges of the situation

In a community setting
  • We can assess the environment, and advise families, carers and staff on how to structure the living areas to cater for the needs of the young person with ASD

At Sunfield
  • We offer assessments over one, two or three days, depending on the complexity of the assessment

  • Carers or professionals accompanying the young person are fully involved in the assessments and may stay with the young person overnight in Sunfield’s Family Centre if required
