Working with families
Families tell us that they need advice and guidance about Autistic Spectrum Disorders (ASD) which are specific to their son or daughter and to their situation.
Sometimes they want some day-time respite care, secure in the knowledge that their son or daughter is in the hands of staff who understand the needs and challenges arising from ASD.
Families say that the bridging support and advice from the SAOS team helps their understanding of their son or daughter in school and at home.
Siblings of a young person with ASD face particular issues which are not readily recognised.
- We assess the environment and provide advice for families on structuring the home and daily life
- We provide time-limited, intensive support, and withdraw at an agreed rate to ensure sustainability of the programme
- We can provide longer-term support focusing on agreed targets and goals
- We provide written reports to support consistency of practice
- We offer training for other agencies working with individual children or young people
- Periodically, Sunfield provides activities and special events for siblings, where they can share the issues of ASD with others who understand
- We can provide access to training and special focus days for family members
