As in every aspect of life at Sunfield, relationships are at the heart of education. Our expert on-site teams work together – across education, care, health, psychology and therapies – to develop a far deeper understanding of each child. By really getting to know your child – their communication preferences, individual strengths and interests, and behavioural challenges – the Team Around the Child (TAC) can support their unique educational journey.
Education at Sunfield begins by creating an environment in which your child can feel secure; somewhere they feel their needs are met, their feelings can be safely expressed and are recognised, and their communication is heard and understood. Here, they will be able to discover and demonstrate their strengths and develop their self-esteem. In our experience, this is the point at which they will start to really engage with their learning.
Your child will have ongoing learning objectives, based around the relevant National Curriculum, which will be monitored and tailored to their needs and abilities. But learning here at Sunfield goes far beyond this. We would also like them to feel confident in their system of communication. Crucially, this will enable them to better focus their attention, enjoy meaningful relationships, and to integrate with their community in a way that makes them feel connected and valued for their contribution.
We can create bespoke learning opportunities that make the most of our on-site services, such as therapies, as well as our facilities, which include a range of real-life settings such as a farm, garden and café, where they can use and apply their developing skills. It is all here for your child, and we will help them to feel secure enough to access what they need, when they need it, in order to achieve in their education and to develop valuable life skills.

All schools keep records about students’ achievements in key areas of learning. At Sunfield, we carefully track the social, emotional and academic progress our students make, and use this to set ambitious targets and plan for further improvement. In Maths and English we use the National Progression Guidance Materials to compare our students’ progress in Maths and English with other SEN students nationally.
We are proud that, despite the complexity of their needs and the difficulties that many of our students have experienced in engaging with learning in previous settings, the majority of Sunfield students achieve or exceed the rates of ‘P level’ progress made by other children nationally, year on year. This shows that, with the right support and intervention, every child really can engage, enjoy and achieve.
We also use external accreditation schemes and play an active role in local moderation groups to ensure that our judgements are benchmarked against those of other Special Schools. If you would like further information on the use of student achievement data at Sunfield, please contact Lydia Swinton, Head of Learning and Progress.
