Health Care

Caring for the specific health needs and general well-being of children, so they can actively enjoy life.

Personal attention

Sunfield’s personalised and holistic approach begins with the health, safety and well-being of every child; providing a secure foundation upon which they can develop in their learning and living. In support of this, every child undergoes an initial health assessment to formulate their individualised health plan. Their key worker and assigned members of the health team will then ensure that all aspects of their needs are monitored and recorded in the health plan; including liaison with family, colleagues and health professionals.

Comprehensive care

We have a dedicated Health team of registered nurses who provide a daily, year-round service, based in our on-site health care facilities. Children are also registered with a local GP practice, with access to both male and female doctors. Alongside our responsive health care, Sunfield also works hard to maintain a healthy environment for children at all times. For further information on Sunfield’s healthy living initiative, please read our Fact Sheet on Healthy Living and Nutrition at Sunfield.

Expert team

The Health team manager provides consistent clinical supervision, management, teaching and monitoring, to maintain the quality of our Health service at all times. We also welcome the supervised placement of student nurses, where appropriate, as we recognise that time spent with the children provides them with invaluable insight into caring for the needs of children with disabilities. Every nurse at Sunfield maintains and enhances their professional development in accordance with guidance from regulatory and professional bodies.

Proactive health care

We run regular health monitoring clinics, as well as yearly dental and optical checks, along with more frequent appointments for services such as chiropody and psychiatry. LAC medicals and incontinence assessments are led by a skilled nurse on our Health team. Qualified first aid staff are always on duty at Sunfield, with senior staff also being trained to administer medication.

Responsive health care

If your child has very specific, complex or even potentially life-limiting health needs, we can support their visits to hospital consultants and enable them to access any specialist services, as needed. We have extensive experience of looking after children with a wide variety of conditions (related and unrelated) and are therefore able to support the health needs of almost all children. Where necessary, we can also train our Health staff to undertake specific clinical tasks, and ensure that the required protocols are in place and reviewed regularly.

However complex their health needs, Sunfield aims to support your child, and your family, in providing the health care they need to flourish.
