Sunfield’s Assessment Service complements local diagnostic and assessment services. Our specialist multi-disciplinary assessment team works with parents, schools and service providers on a local, national and international level, providing a comprehensive evaluation of the child’s needs. Assessments may be diagnostic in nature or relate to specific identified needs such as Sensory Integration. We also provide bespoke packages of consultation, staff training, educational and/or therapeutic input.
Our assessment team comprises Sunfield’s specialist teachers and psychology and therapies staff, drawing on the wide range of expertise available on-site. We can accommodate assessments on-site. Our family centres provide the opportunity for short-term accommodation for the child, their family and/or key staff team during the assessment period, particularly those travelling from further afield, including our international connections. We can also assess children within their home, school or residential environment where appropriate.
Sunfield’s Outreach Service offers direct educational and/or therapeutic support to children with Autistic Spectrum Disorders, with or without additional complex and challenging needs, as well as advice to schools across neighbouring counties. Each support programme is individually negotiated and personalised, and provides an integrated approach to learning, daily living skills and domiciliary care, in all settings, across the waking day. The specialist, inter-disciplinary team has a wide range of experience, working with children and adults with Autistic Spectrum Disorders throughout mainstream and special education. The Outreach team is tailored to the individual needs of the child, from Sunfield’s team of specialist teachers, TEACCH trainers, family support services, psychologists, occupational therapists, speech and language therapists, play therapist, music therapist, psychotherapist, and sensory integration experts.
The Outreach Service has the capacity for early specialist intervention in education, supporting local staff and families to develop the skills to sustain the child in their own environment. We can also provide outreach support to children who are due to commence an agreed placement at Sunfield, as a way of easing their transition to their new school environment.
The families and siblings of the child with whom the Outreach team work are also entitled to Sunfield’s full range of family support and training opportunities.
Our aim is to support inclusion and enhance access to learning and opportunities for children with Autism Spectrum Disorders within their own community. Each assessment and programme of support is tailored to the strengths, needs and challenges of the child with Autism Spectrum Disorder.
Referrals can be made by local authorities or private sponsors, including parents. The assessment information will provide a starting point for specialist advice and guidance, to schools, parents and carers, in effectively and sensitively meeting the needs of children with Autistic Spectrum Disorders.
